I built tarzans.net for my dad's tree business. He wanted a place to put up images to display the work he's done. I also got a friend that wanted an image gallery for his business, so I decided to put the ideas together and build a PHP/MySQL site for the images. The new design for tarzans.net is now online and is basically the same, except for background images, as the other site will be.

What do you guys think? Am I missing anything important from a visitors point of view? I'd like to get any necessary changes out of the way before my friend wants his site finished.

By the way, before you mention it as a bad idea, my dad wanted the Tarzan holler - not me.

I don't like the font. Let me rephrase: I *like* that font, just not for a Web page. That's part of what's making it look weak.

You mention that folk should look at the photo galleries, but there's nothing called "Photo Gallery" anywhere. I figured it out, but others will not.

Consider the organization of content on your site. You've got a home page and you've got photo galleries. That's all. On the home page, have a better description of what you do, not just rhetorical questions about it. And take the thanksgiving greeting off. It's already dated. No one is coming to your site for those kinds of greetings. They want their trees cut. Show that you can do the best job by describing what you do and showing it to them.

Maybe some kind of "about" page would be nice. You know, how long you've been doing this, compliments you received in the past, awards you've won, and the like. A contact page would be helpful, with a form to fill out in regard to requests for service.

Group those gallery pages into one section of the site, like "Work" or "Portfolio."

Yes, the holler is annoying (just *try* to talk him out of it. For me? Please??) and is another thing making the site weak. It's just not professional. It's like the marquee: it was cool when it first came out, but now it's extremely annoying and out of vogue.

So, c'mon...vogue. Just kidding. Post back.

That green is too bright in my opinion. It's like neon green which isn't nice on the eyes :)

It's kind of funny. The audio clip? Well it made me jump out of my skin at first, then it made me laugh :D

Thing is, I was laughing *at* it, rather than *with* it.

The design just doesn't say 'We do a professional job' to me.

There's so much you could do with the design - Go look at gardening magazines and books, get some inspiration for your site.

Thanks for the comments.

I'll do my best to convince my dad to drop the holler, but he got several comments about it on his site before so he wants it on the new one too.

Thanks for the suggestion of the gallery section. I'll see what I can come up with for that.

I thought the font felt right for the site because of the cartoony Tarzan drawing. I'll see if I can find something else that fits though.

Does the cartoon theme of the website make the business seem unprofessional in itself or does that just add to the other problems with the site?

it does the job fine, but i hate the design, that green is too bright and the font is ugly, the composition doesn't work for me, but it works and thats what matters

I think the cartoon tarzan could work fine if everything else screamed professional. It doesn't, though. You're not a cartoon-y business! You aren't selling yourselves as a happy-go-lucky crew of guys who stop by, have a few laughs, and rip out a tree while you're there. And it's good that you aren't putting yourself there.

But you're working on it and we're here when you have some new ideas implemented. Don't worry. You'll get to a spot where you like it, your dad likes it, customers like it, so it won't matter what we have to say!

I'm curious to see what you do next.

I would agree. Since you are trying to promote a business/service, looking professional is the way to go. You want people to form that "pro" image of your site when they first arrive. Keep tweaking though :)
