I recently completed building a pc that currently runs windows 2000 SP4. The system itself is fine, but when I try to do windows update [in internet explorer SP1], the computer freezes and upon reboot I get a message saying "One of your disks needs to be checked for constituency" I let this run, and it finds a few errors usually in \Winnt\SYSTEM\ the files it points to are usually called something like windowsupdate.log and things like that. I have patched it from the LSASS and DCOM flaws before connecting to the internet and also have a decent firewall and up to date virus protection so can anyone see the problem? If anyone doesn't know, then I will reformat the hard disk, but I may replace the current hard disk and then format that with windows 2000 or XP.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
-Jamie

Why don't you go through the automatic update in control panel? could be a problem with ur IE. Are u using IE6?

I turned it on but it kept crashing win2k. - as soon as I connect to the net it locks up as well, I've heard that my graphics card has a known problem in windows 2000 - and the intellipoint mouse system causes a error in win2k as well. Microsoft say the only resolution is to reinstall windows 2000 professional.

I have now bought a new dvd/cd-rw drive from ebay to replace the current drive, as it won't let me boot from cd using that drive (my windows 2000 cd is a original and is bootable!!)

Formatting the hardrive and going with Windows XP is a wise choice. Win2K is one of Microsofts biggest screw ups. The trouble it will take you to straighten out Win2k probaly isn't worth your time.

The trouble it will take you to straighten out Win2k probaly isn't worth your time.Check your facts! Win2k is so far the most stable and reliable version of Windows released, being more stable than both Win2k3 and WinXP. Problems with Win2k are mostly caused by device drivers and registry screwups that are not Microsoft caused, or by third party software (including other Microsoft software).

Weazel: There are some problems with Windows Update and Win2k, and not all of these have an entry in the knowledge base. However, the knowledge base is the place you should look for the problem in.

As for the DVD, that's probably not a Windows problem, but a BIOS problem. Make sure the BIOS settings have the DVD before any HD in the startup order.

Not talking from anything but experience. XP is the most stable Microsoft release to date. I've worked with 3.0 all the way up to XP professional. Solving problems with the outdated win2K will produce more problems. The quick and reliable solution is to get rid of 2000 and install XP. The truth hurts sometimes but will be best in the long and in this case the short run.

i had my dvd drive as my first boot device, and then it still wouldn't boot....so I bought a new one as the old one was failing.
My windows 2000 cd is a bootable version, cos my laptop will boot it..

Also, Windows 2000 is better for trouble free computing, as it doesnt load the "useful but nasty" crap that comes with windows xp, such as system restore (yuck)

However, I still find windows server 2003 better than windows 2000 server in reliabilty terms. It also has better support for multi processor servers and such like...
the only thing that is preventing me installing windows xp, is that my only xp pro disk is a cracked copy which I dont want to use...(I got it off a friend) I upgraded my laptop from xp home to pro using it and i ended up reformatting it with a copy that i cloned from my school ( a copy of xp pro)...but the copy i used got stolen. I am going to get a new copy, but don't have the £££ for a genuine copy at the moment, but I will get a gen version..

Anyway, its still baffeling......win2k is very reliable, but i think this installation has been damaged due to the failed dvd drive....so i will fit a new one and reformat

changed the dvd drive to a MSI G52-C8302X1 which is a cd/cd-rw drive. I set the jumper on the back to "master" and put it as my first boot device...

I insert the win2k disk, which is bootable, and i get a error message...I can't be arsed to update my BIOS...which I think maybe the cause..
Any ideas?

Hey buddy, you gotta face the facts. XP ain't as stable as W2k in any way. W2k is the most stable Microsoft Desktop OS so far.

Weazel, what's the error message like?
Is the CD RW drive an IDE device? If it is, is it the only one on the IDE cable?

yer i the error message was something like "Error booting from ATAPI CD-ROM, enter system disk and try again"
I haven't changed the IDE cable, and the cd drive is the only device on the channel.

Anyway, I have a spare IDE cable at home and I will change it over when i get home from School...
