brothercake 10-29-2004, 08:00 PM I'm just about ready to launch the new (5th) incarnation of brothercake.com .... only about 18 months late ...
Anyway: http://afs.brothercake.com/
Any glaring problems I've missed, or anything else?
gsnedders 10-29-2004, 08:30 PM OK, First things first, I'm on Mozilla 1.8 alpha 4 Windows... Yes... Windows... :p
The images are slow to load which is annoying, and I'm on a 512kb/s connection... Also, having two menus is just pure confusing, it's more to do with the fact that it has two home links on the home page which makes me go like .
All in all, I'd give the site a
I see there's a new version of UDM... That's good news for me... Just another reason to finally start developing my new site
oracleguy 10-29-2004, 08:46 PM On Firefox 0.10.1 on Windows it seems strange on your stylesheet switcher that the apply button is between "remember me" and the actual checkbox.

There was no such problem in Mozilla 1.8 alpha 4...
AaronW 10-29-2004, 09:32 PM I get it here, too. Same browser as oracleguy though, so that makes sense ;)
Looks like it just needs clear: both or something along those lines?
Looking good! No problems I can tell in Win XP IE 6. Regarding loading time, it is a bit slow but not too noticable. I gather it might be due to the fact that the site is hosted in Europe (?), so North American visitors would expect some sluggishness.
gsnedders 10-29-2004, 10:16 PM George, remember that I'm in Europe and the images were very slow... in the same country as Brothercake... Well... Sort of... :p
redhead 10-29-2004, 10:35 PM It doesn't seem slow for me on 512k... interesting. The design looks great, code is lovely and shiningly clean :)
I get the Apply button between remember me and the checkbox as well, Firefox Seabadger 0.9.2. It's looking great, and yet keeping the general vibe of your old site too, nicely done :)
brothercake 10-29-2004, 11:00 PM It is actually hosted in Alaska ... but I know the server sucks for speed and latency. I'm moving soon, to a London-based host that isn't a reseller's reseller ...
Thanks for all the comments anyway :) I've seen that button problem .. I'd forgotten about it though, doesn't happen in Opera 7, Safari or Firefox PR1, and that's all I have in front of me at the mo .. I'll have to do some windows testing clearly.
And yeah that secondary nav is a bit confusing - but without CSS it makes a lot more sense. So I think I'm gonna make that offleft stylee, so it is still there but not as a visible tab.
gsnedders 10-29-2004, 11:05 PM London... that'll mean it'll be nice and fast for us :)
I don't get the button problem in Safari... just Mozilla 1.8 alpha 4 then...
brothercake 10-30-2004, 01:24 AM It was if the column is very wide - like viewed fullscreen at 1152 - but i've fixed it now, and the other things :)
mindlessLemming 10-30-2004, 02:21 AM I'm not going to bother looking at the code -- you're a semantics nut, so we'll assume that it's as clean as the driven snow :p
As for the design, great inmprovement
The only thing that lets it down is the header... That bamboo graphic and the shade of yellow are pretty tacky and tend to clash with your shiny new content.
Instead of just having a whinge I've thrown together something that I think would fit in more with the professionalism of your client work.
The changes consist of:
- adding letter-spacing: .2em; (or there abouts) to '[brothercake]'
- changing sub heading font to match typography style of header and style of sub header used within home page content area.
- changing header colours to match rest of site.
- moving sub header next to logo (This would be floated next to your logo; when it needs line-breaks it will still stay seperate from logo)
- replacing tiled header BG with two images which fade out so as not to cause a harsh line due to large font sizes.
If you like the mock-up, I'll give you good copies of the two corner images
brothercake 10-30-2004, 06:34 PM I like it :) Thanks man
Can you mail me the graphics to cake[at]brothercake.com? ta muchly..
mindlessLemming 10-30-2004, 10:34 PM You got mail :D
