I've set up my entire page with the help of people here... now it comes to advertising it.

What do meta tags do? I've read some contradicting things. some say they're dead, others not.

Which meta tags should i include, and on what pages?

Thanks

Hi Jameson,

The best metadata tags to use are those in the Dublin Core set. You can find more information here:
http://dublincore.org/

You will not need to use them all, and those you do use should be tailored to each page to capture the correct keywords etc.

Yes, you'd think considering that they are touting the organisation of metadata the navigation would be a bit more intuitive...

The tags you are most likely going to be interested in are:

Title,
Creator,
Subject (i.e. keywords),
Description,
Publisher,
Date.

There are a load more here (http://dublincore.org/documents/dces/), and a DC_Assist tool here (pop-up) (http://dublincore.org/tools/) which should help.
