How about a c/c++ forum?

Just curious, how many of you code in, or are interested in the disucussion of c/c++ programming?

This year I will be extensively working with C++ writing hash structures, binary search trees, etc, for my APCS class.

I don't feel there is enough demand for there to be a forum on just C++, but perhaps a general programming language forum which includes Java, C#, Visual Basic (shudder), etc may be more appropriate.

Well, George, conceptually it's an interesting idea. But look at the other forums you support: HTML, JavaScript, PHP, XML, Perl, MySQL. These are all web technologies. C++ is a programming language, and operates on a different level entirely.

I'm interested, but I have my hands full dealing with the web.

how many people could provide answers to the questions that will be asked? i for sure wront because i have only just started in C++. will the forum just end up being a board tons of threads and no replys to them?

i`m interesting in learning C++, so it would be a great help, as this forum is of top quality unlike other forums/boards i have seen.
so it would be of great help and use to me.

Well actually web based programs can be written in that as well. Honestly though I would never go that route though as those programs sometimes tend to be much slower than using say Java or PHP.

Depends on compiling and what it is doing, Spook.

I use it, code in it (although usually I'm only using it in cobra teams and security audits of clients/corps, not really in a web-applicable sense). Though I'd agree with JKD about a more varied approach (especially since C# is going to be gaining alot--more--of users as time goes on), but that it would not fit into standard server side languages (as we have in PHP, ASP--though technically PERL--and PHP to a constantly improving extent--would be the cross between the two) since the languages that fit into this category would be more along the lines of machine language.

I think a few of us would benefit from it, certainly those interested in learning about it...but as a whole? I don't see it being that busy, though there is a large C#/machine coderwalkers group out there that you could get to (and that, of course, leads to getting away from client-side scripting which has always been a stumbling block as we kicked around new forum ideas). But I want a COBOL forum...68% of the internet runs on COBOL, yet most schools don't even offer it...you know how much a COBOL user gets paid, considering a massive demand? (and considering that I'm a tad rusty on it, I recently realized, long story...long evil story, but with laughs!)

At this point I'm thinking perhaps just a general "computer programming" forum which can accomodate a whole range of non web scripting languages.

Besides c/c++, what are some other popular non web languages? For example, is Cobol one?

python and ruby I have noticed seem to be showing up on more an more hosts. Of course java is a biggie, and as jkd mentioned c# and vb.

The best way to find out what is common is to go host shopping. Most will say what they support you can use that as a guide of what is popularly supported

i'd definitely be interested in a general programming forum. we'd finally have some place to send all the java questions in the JS forums.

I'm fairly sure there's already a forum here for other server side stuff

Maybe that one could be refined to incorporate general programming.

Or we would always get rid of the Perl forum. :D

We're all a little slow to notice George has added a forum now ;)

Heh. Lets see how the new forum does....there's always the option of removing it if it doesn't fly.
