View Full Version : Spell Checker

Hello to one and all!

I am new to this forum!

Can any point me in the right direction of source code/tutorials/help files/etc on how to create a spell checker from scratch? I have managed to create a spell checker through JS but it unfortunately links into another piece of coding (by a company) which generates the spell checker. Now instead of ripping off that company's software, which is only a trial version anyhow, i would like to know(if possible) how to create one from scratch - as this company has a license on the linked spell checker.

I know it involves quite a bit of work but would like to know how?

Does anybody know how to do this or have any advice?

Many thanks in advance

A fully featured spell-checking program is not for the novice (or perhaps even intermediate) programmer. You better be ready to bust your hump on this one. Where do you plan on getting your dictionary from?

BTW, javascript, as a language, it most unsuited for doing a spellchecker. Some here would argue that it's impossible, and they're darn close. Since the only type of server-side file javascript can read from is another .js file (which is essentially text), you'd need a flat text file dictionary that you could convert to a format usable by javascript. Possible, yes. Worth it. No, not in my opinion, by a long shot.

It's possible if you load the whole dictionary into an array. Only one problem, no computer/browser in the world would be able to handle it.

righty-o. Agree 100%. I want to say that a decent spell checking dictionary would have somewhere between 200,000-300,000 words.
