main page redirect

ok the probelm, i got a pop-up that has the sites menu, how would I get the main page to redirect when the pop-up is closed by clicking the X?????

I've been told its

window.opener.doSomething()

But its never worked. Maybe someone can kill 2 birds with one stone here...

Is this only when the window is closed with the X or whenever the window is closed... If the first, I doubt it can be done because there are too many ways to close the window and you can not capture which one was used...
