View Full Version : language codes

I got in the habit of marking my pages as "en-us" after I saw that on the W3 web site, but I've never seen anybody else use that convention. Is that code considered valid and relevant, or is it just "en"?
I can understand differentiating between the two, but then again, it kinda seems like a pointless detail.

I'd imagine the W3 folks wouldn't use it if it weren't valid and relevant. Using just plain "en" would likely suffice too, but being even more specific couldn't hurt, no?

A quick google revealed this: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/struct/dirlang.html
Haven't read it myself, but might interest you.

As a rule I use full language codes for my pages (en-au), but I wish search engines (read:google) actually counted these when deciding the country of origin :( It's not my fault my Australian pages are hosted in the US.. well, ok it is - but you get the picture.
