I'd been interested in the Stargate SG-1 boxed season sets for a while. I bought the first season today and watched the first few episodes this afternoon. One thing I noticed pretty quickly was that it didn't have english subtitles - just spanish and french.

Why does it matter? Namely because I am hard of hearing; I have about 5% the hearing of a normal person. Needless to say, it isn't much, and over the years, I have relied on closed captioning when watching TV and VHS movies, and subtitles when watching DVD movies. Now, I've never had a problem with DVD subtitles before, but those DVDs were movies, not TV shows. But because of my limited hearing, I need the captioning or subtitles in order to be able to follow along with what's being said.

So, having spent the money that I had, the lack of english subtitles in a video that I was wanting for some time was quite a bummer. I watched, and had to really listen, but still didn't hear and understand everything.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of situation before? Does it have as much of an impact on you as it does on me? What do you think ramifications could be of this, in terms of accessibility issues?

Although I've never tried it but try turning the closed captioning on on your TV, my thinking is that since it is a TV show and not a movie, the closed captioning information might have been saved on the DVD and thats why there is no english sub-titles.

contact the makers and ask them. I would look into it, in the UK it might be classed as discrimination against people with disabilities with some law to do with it.

If i was in your position i would be very annoyed and send a copy of your complaint to a newspaper.
