web hosts!?

I was asked to build a website for a friend a while ago which is how i got into webdesign. he had a doman name and i was told i needed a host. i bought a basic host and changed the server details the domain was on. I then started web building!

However, i recently went to purchase another domain for another site, and it came with FTP, 25MB of memory, and 15 POP accounts.

Does this mean that a webhost is not needed?

I cannot really work out why you need a webhost other than to provide more MB Space. Why/how does the host also determine whether u can use MySQL and PHP and such?

I suppose i am looking for an indepth answer/article about Web Hosting and the why and when it's worth using them. Along with the disadvantages of not using them.

That is your host that you're buying your domain from...And it'll be 25MB of space, not memory, I don't think I'd ever have a site being run off a server with only 25MB memory.

Coz they own the servers? And have the servers set up with php and mysql?

Without a host, you have no site.

Some name vendors provide hosting, some hosts provide names.... some stick to one or the other. If you want to take that domain name to another server/host you will be able to I'd expect.

for less than $100/year you can get the site hosted and the domain shouldn't cost more than $35/yr.
