Coding client side smart programs to enter form data for you.

I wanted to code a frontend of my own for some forums(for example). I'm wondering how I would go about logging in, and how do i parse the normal forum display pages (for messages) to see if something had been said or whatever?! (It's just an example).

Has anyone seen any documentation or tutorials for this kind of progamming??
