google redirecting?

Hey,

I've noticed a few sites linking to external pages, but using a prefixed google address before it.. .eg:


http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=http://www.bored.com


why are they doing this? I thought possible as google would be getting hits which look like they are coming from the site who is linking, they might increase their own rankings??

This is all that I could really find on the matter, it seems that the big deal is spamming of some sort.
