Confused!

Hello there programmers,
At this moment i sit in awe at how facinating all this programming stuff is, it just seems so vast. Well, although i have had a few years experience with HTML/XHTML web programming is something i am looking to get into.
To be honest, i have had no experience at all in this field and obtaining free JavaScript code snippets is about as close as i ever got to it (i didn't even fully understand them either!).
What i want to know is, just how can i get into this stuff and which language should i learn? I heard that are several and have been told that Perl is by far the best (if a best can even exist).
Thing is, i am doing a course at University called New Media and in the second year we will apparently be doing some stuff with what's called ColdFusion. However, i'd like to get ahead of myself and start now. Also, regretably, my course doesn't focus much at all on this, but rather the more artistic side to the web (eg - graphics) which disheartened me a little because if i knew when choosing my course what i know now i would have certainly given some kind of computer science course a go.
Are there any books out there which make this introduction to web programming simple? I think if i am going to start i need to take it slowly.
Any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much. 'Confused' - a wannabe programmer. :)
