It's probably already asked, but I was wondering what measures I should take to make a website a bit protected against evil people who want to steal my design.

I figured out that you can just put a copyright notice at your page, but is this enough? and what power does it give me when someone is stealing my design?

I also read somewhere, that when I create a website for someone else, that it is usefull to make a notice that both parties have to sign, and that makes it clear that it is my design (in case they would take somebody else to continue the site, working with my design), or that I made it, but that it's their property, as they paid me for it.

Can anybody give me an example of such a thing? or does anyone has a url where I can find such a thing? (or a summary of what I should put in it)

any help appreciated

Johan

Baically, putting a © on a site is good enough, but if you want the formal legal protection, you'll need to officially register it with the goverment. Usually about $30 - $40 per site.

You can do that at your local city hall. As a side note, for designers, anything that you post a copyright symbol on will be considered your ownership -- you can just clearly argue the date that you copyrighted it and would have to prove it more aggressively in court.

While we're on the subject, if you're a writer out there, and you want to copyright your work for free -- mail it to a friend, or back to yourself. All original works via US mail is copyright in transit, making it a federal crime to steal. It's been helpful in my poorer days.

Well, thanks.

the problem might be the fact that I live in Belgium (Europe).

I never heard about the mail-trick, that's a good idea.
