my psu was burn up and i tried to email to dell supoort service, asked them if it is possible to use other brand of power supply on my computer and they didnt give me straight answer. my psu model is NPS-250kb and its 250W. but i cant find any 250W power supply here. i can only find at lease 300W. So i would like to knw if it is possible to use other brand of power supply or Dell power supply only???

i don't see why not. power supply is proprietary. there are no dell only power supply. i'm pretty sure 300W is fine replacing 250.

i tried with my psu from old computer, i see a green light from d motherboard n when i switch on d power, it dosnt on. My Dell psu is like This (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3481738461&category=42019) . u will notice that psu has power cable in and 110W to 220W switch. Most of the psu i could fine here has extra features, like power switch n monitor out. so there is no way that i could put other psu in to DELL case because they only design for the psu those are like i linked above. any help??? thanx

I am not an expert on this, but I believe a standard P4-compliant ATX power supply is technically compatible with your Dell Dimension 8200 (but not necessarily with other Dells). That having been said, you may have physical issues with the Dell case such as providing access to the power switch. I suggest you obtain further information by searching the Dell support forums and reviewing the following link.

Other Dell owners browsing this forum should be aware that this thread and a related one (http://www.codingforums.com/showthread.php?t=36593&highlight=dell) contain some well-meaning but inaccurate advice. In fact, many Dells made between 1998 and early 2002 use non-standard power supplies with connectors that look identical to standard connectors but have different pinouts. If you plug a standard power supply into one of these Dells, you will fry the motherboard. This issue has been widely reported and discussed. Some retailers offer an adapter that addresses the problem. See the following links for more information:

That's what I was trying to point out in that other thread but nobody seemed to want to believe me.

no. the replacement psu you listed will not work. The Amperage is too different.

Ive been in a round and round with the dell tech team such as it is. All I get is that dell advises against upgrading the power supply. Ive also been checking up on choices of supplies and found that all are not made the same, some dell pcs has pinouts that differs from the norm and not all atx power supplies will work http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=1882508 Try reading up on this link it may help.
If I had known about all the proprietary problems with a dell I may not have used one to build upon, I mean the prices for everything is out of this world, or you have to take a saw to something or other to make something work

I just installed a standard ATX power supply (albeit a cheap one: CompUsa SKU 282827 - 500 Watt 12V ver1.2 ATX) in a Dell Dimension 8200 PC. The Dell case does not allow for the toggle switch on the back of PWS to protrude through the case so I had to cut out piece of metal on the Dell case; these Clamshell cases are the worst design since the old wraparound metal cover that required 4 arms to get the hooks and groves aligned. Once I made a hole for the switch it installed securely without a problem. The old power supply (Model: HP-P2507F3 rev H01 Dell P/N: 4G456) appears simmular to a standard PWS except -5v, white wire, is missing on the ATX connector (main 20 pin connector attached to the MB) and of course no toggle switch. The computer turned on with the power switch on the front of the PC without a problem and presently I have been running Prime95 for 20 min without an error.
So far no smoke no fire no bad smell.
I don't know if the system will be stable tomorrow or 6 months from now but I hope this answers some questions.
