hi there!

how would one connect to another remote pc outside the use of a client like kazaa or winmx? i poked around a bit and was led toward basic dos utilities, a login? command but some of what i saw made me think that was only for dial up modems...

i'm xp, broadband - other party is win98 broadband.

be more specific on what your trying to do. If your just trying to connect to play games there are protocols for that. If your trying to do some file sharing then maybe you should look into ftp servers, I believe XP comes with one. If your trying to do some desktop viewing then I would suggest some vnc software.

jason,

tyvm for the reply. just file sharing (actually - and i doubt this matters - but it'll all be one side, i'll be sending large files). i'm familiar with using ftp via a server, but not directly - and the files are too large to route through a site's ftp space or through one of the free ftp servers available. i'm assuming it's drag and drop once i connect... and xp does have a built file transfer protocol, in fact they've got a built in remote desktop acquisition feature - but the other machine is on win98, and i'd like to avoid using a client or 3rd party utility like BT. i'm sure there's a simply command line that'll connect you to another willing IP, i just don't know what it is :)

If you install IIS you can set up your own FTP folder. Then he can access it at ftp://yourIPaddress. Or depending on your settings if you just share the folder with the files in it, he may just be able to connect to your PC and all shared folders by typing \\yourIPaddress in the run box. Further details can be provided, just ask.

IIS is internet information services should be on the Windows XP CD. Just pop it in and choose add additional windows components. Make sure IIS is checked and that all desired child boxes are clicked. Once it's installed go to administrative tools in control panel and go to . . .web services I think. I don't have it installed at the moment so this is by memory. Then inside web services is FTP where you can specify your default FTP folder. I believe you right click and go to properties on the folder that is displayed. Change it or keep it and move your files to it.

Try to keep the uptime for the FTP server as minimal as possible. FTP is not a secure protocol. it is plain text, so anybody can sniff the packets going back and forth and figure out the password to get in.

Just on a side note. If you only wish to share a single file now and again, You can use MSN Messenger or somthing similar and just transfer the file. With my cable connection I transfer at about 20kbps not so bad.

it seems that my legitimately purchased copy of xp has been misplaced or stolen by hooligans, but it's running now.

the command line i was searching for turned out to be 'ftp'. i might have found that delightfully ironic if staring at this fkn monitor for 3 days trying to figure that out hadn't made my eyes bleed.

anyhow, thanks very much for the help - i wouldn't have given the installed files more than a second glance if you hadn't confirmed they were there, so for whatever it's worth you saved me some time and frustration.

in reply to replies:
unit: i wont, ty for the heads up ;)
bass: yeah, but they tend to have rather small file size limits (at least aim and ym do; i'm too sexy for msnm so i wouldn't know on that one). correct me if i'm wrong.

so long.
