I tried to install IIS on my laptop but, unfortunately, I'm not at home to use the w2k cd. I've looked through the MS site but cannot find a place to download it. Is this something that can be installed only from the cd?

Sadly, no. The only version of IIS that was downloadable was IIS4 for NT4.

You could download a PWS ...

Did you get the contents of the CD copied to your local hard drive somewhere? A lot of installations do that, search your drive for a directory named "i386" (that's not in a patch installation directory), if it's there you can just direct any request for the CD to that directory. Otherwise, you'll need to use your CD at home.

I might try this. Are most of these capable of running asp?

Don't. PWS is aimed at W95 or W98 and you've stated you're running W2K. Any downloadable version of PWS would at best be equivalent to IIS 4.0 which is not the right version for running under W2K. Isn't there anyone around you holding a W2K CD you could use? Are you so far from home where your CD is at that it's going to be a terrible delay getting and using it?
Save yourself the trouble and install the right version of IIS.

Isn't IIS the same basic thing as apache?

Yes, the are both web servers but apache does not natively support ASP. You can get modules that sort of make ASP work on Apache but I don't think any of them are free.
