Hey, Ive been going at my lil bros computer for days trying to sort out errors and the usual screwups that happen and Im about to go frickin crazy, I have just gotten off of it after installing Windows Me for about the 50th time(figures are prolly accurate ) and every little thing you try and do results in some sort of Fatal Error or the Blue Screen of doom, anyways after my efforts of trying to no avail ive taken notes and am turning to anyone here who may be able to lend a hand but before I get started Ill list some Info about the Pc that may be of use

It has No Internet Connection

I may be able to get the network running but with the problems its having...not likely

Its running an Abit Mb
PII 233 Mhz Prcessor Overclocked 350 Mhz
128 Megs of Sdram
20 Gig Hdd 7200 RPM I bevlieve its an IBM or somethin
24x Cd (I think this has to do with some of the problems)
and all the other basic stuff

And heres all the notes Ive Taken theres alot
Typed Help throught the Run Menu and tried Scrolling throught the available files

Followed By 0E: 0028 : C0030D04
Followed by a black monitor and mouse pointer only

When attempting to run scandisk after "improper shutdown" only drives A: and C: were available.. not sure if relevant

Opened Windows Help and pc restarted W/O confromation ... not first time this occoured

Tried to run ScanReg.exe from run menu when I hit Enter result was Black Screen with a broken green line about 1/4 Inch from top

Tried Installing Drivers for Mother Board got following
Screen swithed before I could copy first error

Followed By
Black Screen and mouse Pointer

Noticed when starting pc it only Checks for Primary MAster and stops

Tried viewing System Info got Black screen with green broken line at top

When starting up it no runs memory check but lists that its all there

Tried Running a thurough Scandisk on C:... Initalized but then went to
Error Filname : WSOCK2(01) + 00001016 Error
Followed By

Also noted the Power Button Only functioned in turning on pc but not off only way to shut down pc sucessfully was pullin the plug also noticed activity led never turns off but Hd isnt active (only when pc is on)

What about trying to put anouther OS like 2000 on there? That's just what I would do. Seams like ME is just too messed up. Why spend the time trying to fix all those problems when you can just install a stabler OS?

It sounds like an overclocking issue.. try not to overclock till you confirm that everything is stable. If you google for overclocking problems, the symptoms you are seeing match very well!

I have tried running 98 but didnt like how outdated it is even though ive heard great things about it I got rid of it and tried putting Xp on it...it didnt work and with the graphics and stuff I dont think it would run on his pc... Also the overclocking issue is probably it now that you mention it because It worked alsmot perfectly before I oc'd it but then when it was our main pc it was running fine at 350 Mhz with no problems but because you suggested it ill kick it down a few notches and get back to you

Yeah, XP will be untolerably slow with those specs.

If a PC is overclocked and starts acting badly the FIRST thing to try is setting it back to run at it's expected speed. If it starts working again then you've overclocked it too far, if it fails there as well then you've eliminated the most likely culprit and can start checking further possibilities.

I atually find 98SE to be the most stable Windows Version, but that's still no where near the stablity of Mac OS X.

Your kidding right? 2000 and XP are light-years ahead of 98SE.

Not necessarily. Overall that's true but if your hardware has defective NT/2K/XP drivers and had good 9x/ME drivers then it wouldv'e been more stable and 98SE was indeed the most stable of the 9x line.

Even Win3.1 which everyone was saying was buggy would run very well for long periods of time if you got a stable configuration. I once had a user who's password on the network (Novell) had been expired for three months but she never knew it because she hadn't logged off of her PC running WFWG 3.11 in nearly five months and she used that PC on a daily basis.

Of course that points out the problem with measuring the reliability of OSes because when a third party vendor provides a buggy driver the end user usually sees it as the "OS" crashed and not as a defective driver and the vendor of the OS is blamed for the crash even though they may have never had a chance to see that particular hardware driver.

That's also why the Mac OS can appear so much more reliable, it's supported hardware is within such narrow bounds that Apple can truly check all of it's drivers so the users aren't dependant on third parties for their drivers. If the Mac OS had to support the wide variety of hardware that Windows does it's quite likely that it'd show similar problems.
