your memory has gone nowhere , you have as much as ever , however you probably have a load of useless background apps and fragments of apps that you no longer use which still affect performance be it at startup or at runtime.

defragment your drive

goto 'add remove programs' in your control panel , remove anything that you know you do not use anymore , be careful though , just cos you do not recognise an app in there does not mean it is not useful (graphic / sound card installs etc).

look in the tray ... are there daft programs like mouse controllers & digital clocks etc that really are not needed ? remove them too , they all steal some of your memory at runtime.

If you have windows ME/98 or XP , goto start->run type in 'msconfig' , in the window that pops up goto 'startup' tab , those are programs that run at startup and may also be useless and memory theives (realsched etc).

You can also look at the services tab , just beware that some services are essential and your computer will not work properly without them ,by going to control panel->administrative tools->services you get a better description of what the services do and you can decide if you need them etc but make the changes via msconfig... that way if it goes horribly wrong you can boot up in safe-mode and reset.

defragment your drive again !

there are also lots of registry checker tools about that clean up the windows registry , I do not know if any of them are free or not and could not recommend one personally

Well, I dont care if my pc takes 5 years to start up, all I am worried about is the runtime speed (when i play games :P).....

At start up I always pull up the task manager and end all processes, I go from about 45 down to 13.....

And would defragmenting my harddrive, give me back my old speed, if so why?

thanks for the help so far :D

Defragment cleans it up. Image you have a binder with papers just put every where. It takes you a while to find a paper you got more then a few days ago. Now if you have the same binder but put things away and it is organized it is very easy to find what you need. Same basic concept with a computer.

Download and run Adaware from Lavasoft too. It'll help root out any spyware that's wormed it's way into your system.
