MS has their own employees working on the development of at least one open source alternative, albeit with much less functionality than the full Visual Studio package. Are you implying that there's another one that MS isn't working with? Or are you just mis-informed about it.

It's in MS's best interest to provide and promote such low end tools since they create a demand for the high end tools and a demand for the OS (also available from MS) which actually runs the code.

I'd post the link to it but I can't remember it's name off the top of my head and I uninstalled it recently because I have the full Visual Studio and decided I'd never need that application.

And for the record, it was MS's web site where I downloaded it though I think it's on SourceForge now.

I have send you by PM the link .. because I think I am not allowed to link it here

I don't say that it is better than VS, but the version is a 0.9 beta , and you get a regular expression builder and a few tools , vb C# converter ! that you don't find in VS

I have VS too .... and I shall keep looking on this tool ... it is much more better than Matrix ..

I see it's definitely not the Free alternative MS worked on. I don't see any reason for not making the URL public though. I doubt the moderators will shut you down if you're not self promoting and letting other know about a good tool is part of what forums are about. Are you not allowed to post the link because the authors don't want too much interest? Surely you don't think MS is going to send some goons to your house to break your legs or something?

Now that I can finally remember it, Web Matrix is the MS supported free offering: http://www.asp.net/webmatrix/default.aspx?tabIndex=4&tabId=46

hehe, i got webmatrix (something like) a year ago because it was advertised so much on dotnetplayground (before i got server, i think dnp isnt free nemore neway) but its a pain for editing most things (it seems to be only good at asp.net) so i use vs.net as it can do so much more, theres like 300 file types or something it can open and make sense of (as in it opens some dlls (not just showing jibberish .. i used it to make the remote control plugin for trillian work better on wmp9 but i decided it was easier typing it as it still broke about 1/4 of the time neway:p), hex, some images... etc)
