Ok, I'm knowledgeable in XHTML, CSS, & DHTML, but I'm gaining curiosity now about PHP. What programming language does it use - cgi, perl, or is it a language of its own?

And how can it be used? Can you use PHP to create a page template for instance, then use HTML to enter contents for the different pages? Is PHP something you'll need to install/download onto your server so that your pages can be viewable, and will I need to install/download something on my computer to be able to use PHP? Or is it mainly for database stuff only?

Also, what's the difference between php and asp? And if you know of any good books for beginners, let me know. I've been to the php.net site but I didn't see where it spelled all this out. Thanks...

PHP is a serverside language of its own.

it may be used in multiple ways as such any other serverside language.
example... http://www.hotscripts.com

templates... yes.

most host servers online have PHP installed and running. nothing for you to download or install to view it online. if you are wanting to view it offline on your own computer, yes, you would have to download and install some server software with PHP modules.

databases... yes, PHP is great when working alongside databases too.
