The script I have says you have to due the following
I have no idea how to do it I have looked at telnet and do not understand what the are talking about Is there someother way of doing it
To set these permissions you have to login into your site using telnet
or ssh and run the following set of commands:
cd <directory where mail manager installed>
chmod a+rwx upload
chmod a+rwx data
chmod a+rwx data/archive
chmod a+rwx data/archive/attach
chmod a+rw list.dat list.txt options.inc password.inc
chmod a+rw index.dat

If you can, you can use an FTP Program to chmod, which is easier than knnowing telnet commands.

CHMOD is a Unix command to change the permissions of a file. CHMOD stands for CHange MODe -- the mode being the file's permissions.
If you have telnet access to your site you would open a telnet session by doing the following
then enter your username and password
and you will get a new prompt depending on what shell they use.
The instructions you listed are step by step instructions on what to type at the command line. As for what they mean...
"chmod a+rwx upload" means to set the permissions for all users to read/write/execute
cd means change directory.
IF you don't have telnet access to your site, but you have FTP access to your site, you can change file permissions with most good FTP Clients and not worry about the command line stuff you listed.
Most FTP clients have CHMOD functionality built-in. In WS_FTP, for instance, one of the following two methods will work (it depends on your version of WS_FTP):
1 Right-click on the file in the "remote" pane and select "CHMOD (Unix)".
2 Right-click on the file in the "remote" pane. Select "Operations," "FTP Commands," "CHMOD (Unix)."
You'll get a friendly little window where you can check the permissions you want -- all for owner, Read and Execute for Group and World.
this site also lists some other ftp clients you can use.

Ok I downloaded one of the ftp that shows on the page you suggested and when i right click on it it opens a liitle window that says UNIX file flags HAS owner, group and public and under that numeric. BUT it says nothing about how to change to the term
a+rwx is there a code for that. My other ftp could chmod 666, 777 or what ever BUT that term a+rwx is the problem
