AOL to continue Netscape browser production after all?

Well, the 'Save Netscape' pertition was signed by over two thousands. It was sent to AOL executives, and here's the response: <http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15045>

theres no point. netscape can't keep up with mozilla because 1)it's free 2) it's constantly being updated. AIM and ICQ? i don't use either of them? netscape mail? no thank got hotmail and my ISP account. netscape radio? i use shoutcast personaly. any more bright ideas from AOL:p?

Netscape is responsible for a third of the entire Gecko population on the net for the moment. Netscape dying doesn't necessarily mean that people will switch over to Mozilla, and that means that we're limited by a large population of 1.4 derived browsers instead of 1.7 or 1.8 based browsers. 1.6 saw a lot of changes that I had long looked forward to, and 1.7 provides the single largest set of improvements to the latest version (1.6) since the change from 0.9.8 to 0.9.9. Which means I'm really looking forward to the time where I can assume all Gecko browsers to be 1.7 or later.

A new Netscape release means that we'll have more 1.7 or 1.8 users than we would have if a new version wasn't released. So, I consider this really good news.

I'd prefer they release the "Netscape" name to the Mozilla foundation and let them release new "Netscape" branded browsers since most of the people still using it are stuck on the brand name and not any particular feature of the browser itself.
