What I mostly reacted to in that article, though, was the statement "This sets AOL apart from its former sister division, Warner Music, which was recently sold off amid a steep decline in its performance due to digital piracy. "

Does Time Warner have any proof of that cause-effect relation?

I doubt it, like most they are just using it as a scapegoat for having incompetent management and overpriced products.

That phrase seems to be attached to any parts of the story saying there's any sort of deal in the works. It sounds like a tabloid story to me. That's what the NY Post looks like altogether: a local tabloid.
