we'll need for info than that. Give an example of the kind of equation you want to evaluate, and the kind of html you want to generate as a result

Well, I don't know what kind of html code I can expect from an equation but I join to this post a picture of a sample equation edited with Microsoft Equation Editor. It would be nice to find a script allowing the user to create an equation in a browser-based application and to generate a jpeg...
so, any idea ?

What you need for this is MathML, Math Markup Language, which (i think) is currently only supported in recent Mozilla builds and Amaya - but there may be a plugin for IE (not sure).
Check out http://www.w3.org/Math/
Other than that, if you want to generate a jpg it will have to be server side. Dunno about that - maybe ask in the general server-side forum.
There's a MathML Editor for Mozilla (some XUL application) :).
