Yea... how would u program a forum?

Okay... im really stumped... i got here in search of actually wanting to know how to program a forum... any help would be appreciated

Why would you want to reinvent the wheel???
There are plenty of forum software to chose from and a few very decent ones are available for free.

To answer your question you would do it in a server side language(php,asp), javascript is not needed.

If your host offers php and mysql, then http://www.phpbb.com and http://www.invisionboard.com are the popular free forums to download

use the same forum software as this forum. The $65 it costs is a lot cheaper than the amount of life you will burn "reinventing the wheel". Oh, it's called VBULLETIN

Better yet use phpbb

It's subjectively superior - and factually less expensive because it costs nothing.

If I wanted a forum and I knew how to do it, I too would want to program it my self to say " Yea I coded that." And to make sure it did exsacly what I did, they way I wanted, etc.

You could save 80% of your time taking your phpbb open source forum and simply going through it all and configuring it to your own.

There's no logical reason to program a forum from scratch - frankly it's technically impossible.

One can only make a forum once one knows how to make all the pieces seperately, and then conceptualize them into what you call a forum.

Somethings that already done can't be technically impossible. unless the technology used to do it is forgotten, and last time that happened was with the mooner landings it would seem :), or the fall of rome which ever came last.

A forum isn't technically impossible to program. I could do it, but I don't have time at the moment (and I could probably put some really cool features in it too that some have only touched upon!). :)

I might do it for a C# .NET project if I ever get a bit more free time (yeah, that's gonna happen... :()

I agree with the other posts here, though... if you have time to burn then go ahead and learn as much as you can about relational databases and your preferred server-side language... then once you have mastered them, you should be able to create an awesome (or at least very functional) forum.

But really you're better off using one that's already written and configuring it the way you want. Especially if it's FREE!!!

Yea... ok this does in fact help... but I'm like poor and crap so i really am to cheap to actually buy the software for a forum... hence the want to know how to actually programming one... I makes me wonder, are these forums just purchased? or made on frontpage?hahah... ok... well thanks for helping... to tell the truth, I would rather waste my life makin one myself... only 13:thumbsup:

theres an article about it on www.webmonkey.com php section. its a bit outdated though. give it a try ayways. it's fun

another reason to wirte your own forum is that you can make it look exactly how you like (writing a php templae and style would take just abut as long as a simple forum). and you do'nt get the credits at the bottom, however small they may be ;)

yeah...okay that's basicly why anyone would want to have their own forum... I would at least... plus i really don't like web mokey...:rolleyes:
