Over the last couple of days I've noticed a few weird things about my PC.

The first thing I noticed was that the 'Stand By' option had disppeared from the Shut Down menu. Then I tried to type 'msconfig' into 'Run' but it said there was an error and I couldn't access it - same when I tried 'regedit'.

The today I opened the control panel and half the icons had disappeared, so I can only access half of them now. When I opened Program Files in C:, when I tried to scroll down, it wouldn't scroll all the way so I can only access the top ones (got round this by using Explorer). Same with the C:\Windows file - most of the folders are gone and there are relatively few files displayed compared to what used to be there. Simple things like the windows Calculator aren't in there, but when I go to Start, accessories and calculator, it comes up fine.

I thought this was a bit odd, so thought of re-installing windows (not a format) to fix these problems. So I put the Windows 98 CD in and went to My Computer to open it. The D: drive icon had disappeared. So I went to Run on the start menu, typed D: in, but it couldn't find the drive. I rebooted into DOS and typed D:\ in, but it said it didn't exist. It appears that the D drive had unistalled itself

This is very weird. I have done a virus scan (up to date), but nothing. I have Zone Alarm too. What could have caused this ? How can I fix it ? How, at least, do I re-install the D drive ?

Are there any other computer help forums I could ask on also ?

settings -> add/remove hardware or something like that...that will allow your computer to detect new hardware, otherwise using a CD to install the necessisary drivers is important too. but if its a serious you might try a clean install which would best be done by a reformat.....

Have you installed anything lateley? try disabling it/uninstalling
Have you installed any new hardware or drivers? try disabling it/uninstalling

Try windows update, if they still do it for 98..

it could even be a registry problem..
try:
http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/repair.html

well.. ive never experienced that type of thing.. but good luck trying to fix it.

So I put the Windows 98 CD in

ok you are using windows 98..

You might just need to re-install windows 98 from scratch. If you need a bootable floppy so you can access your cd-rom, you can get one from www.bootdisk.com

could also be a hardware error.

Check your system BIOS when you boot up...does the System recognize the cdrom drive?
