I am making my own custom PC in my manufacturing class and my case and everything is going to be clear and I was wondering if it could be damaging to a floppy drive to remove the metal covering and replace it with a transparent one. And would about a disk drive?

Thank you,

I cannot imagine how you'd damage a floppy drive unless you stabbed the internals of it with a tool while prising the cover off.

OTOH, a hard drive can be damaged by particles smaller than what you see as smoke because the heads fly so close to the disk surface. You'd need a clean room and a very well cleaned clear cover in order to make that work and even then you may still find you've damaged the drive. Regardless, you will void any warranty on the drive by opening it. This one isn't impossible but it will take a lot more preparation and care.

why not mount it or wrap it. If you get some reflective paper or somethng, like that posh gift wrap and stick it to it. If that isn't good enough plave it inside a perspex box which will distort it a little and make it look clearish that is if you plan to have case lighting.
