IDs in URLS

i've seen some websites where they have the ID passed through like this:

http://domain.com/dir/dir/2154801/

As if it was:

ttp://domain.com/dir/dir/?id=2154801

how does that first example work?

coffeedemon : it is something to do with your servers configuration if that would work. might want to contact your host.
