View Full Version : Mozilla wants IE

I am using Windows 98 (first edition) with an up-to-date version of MSIE but the rest of Windows is from the original CD (I just installed a new hard drive and installed Win98 "fresh").
I installed Mozilla 1.6 and imported my old profile from my old hard drive.
When I click a bookmark, or type in a URL, Mozilla goes there. But as soon as I click a link in Mozilla (or even attempt to use a form, like the Search box on this site), it opens MSIE, as if it were a "helper" program for Moz. As a fix, I tried making Moz the default browser. Now it opens links, but in new windows every time. Five clicks and I've got five windows open. (Well, six, actually.)
Another oddity is that when I paste a URL into Moz (from IE) and hit Enter it searches Google instead of going to the site!
Do I just need to update Windows or is something a little screwy?
(I am hesitant to update Windows because I've recently been knocked off DSL and am suffering through DialUp for the next month or so. I'd rather wait.)

I'd guess from the sounds of it that you installed the custom software from your ISP and it has made a bunch of changes to how browsing works on your PC. You might try creating a new profile in Moz though just to see if maybe you copied something in the profile from the old system that's causing you this difficulty.

Hmm, well, my ISP doesn't provide any software. It's just Window's standard DialUp Networking....
But my previous profile was used on an ADSL connection - could that be a problem?
I'll try creating a new profile later today, but if you have any further suggestions I'd like to hear them.
Thanks.

I created a new profile, as suggested, but it did not help the problem.

So I uninstalled via Add/Remove, took out all references to Mozilla in the Registry, rebooted and re-installed. To my surprise, it had kept the profiles (both default and the one I had just created) but now it works properly, in either profile. No idea what went wrong, but I sure hope it doesn't go again.
Thanks.

Mozilla doesn't keep it's profiles in the registry since not every operating system it runs on has a registry.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out.
