I just ordered a package from a cheaper web host. How does the process of moving the domain take place? Do I need to intervene?
Thanks,
Ashley

Your new host will give you some dns nametags or/and ip's. Go to your domain provider and enter the new tags into the dns section. Wait 24 - 48 hours for it to update for you.
Yep, manual intervention is required in that you'll need to update your DNS info at your registrar's per your web host's instructions. Depending on your registrar, this could be as easy as logging into some control panel and typing in the new DNS.
FYI a good registrar IMO would be http://www.namecheap.com Good prices, excellent control panel.

I went through this about a month ago and it was a complete mess. Since the initial hosting company (wholesale account) would not release the domain name to its true owner (me) we had to send a fax, cover letter and proof of identity to switch the domain name. The problem was not with the domain provider, networksolutions.com (who were extremely helpful BTW) but the initial hosting company’s lack of service and support.
So the above threads are correct but you may need to find out who your initial web host used to purchase their domain names. After you know this you can go there to change your DNS settings with them if you have the credentials to change them.
After all of what I went through I will NEVER by a domain name unless it is directly from a domain provider.
