I am running Windows 98, first edition....
I have been on DSL for a few years. I just moved and they don't offer DSL here, so it's back to Dialup. I dug out my CD-ROM and installed Dialup Networking. No problems. Then I tried to add a connection. At it's first chance, it froze. For instance, I used the Internet Options icon in Control Panel. When clicking Setup, the Internet Connection Wizard comes up. No matter which option I choose, hitting Next only freezes the "Wizard". I End Task with either CTRL-ALT-DEL or a nifty little program called Stopit. The two that I have to "unfreeze" are Rundll32 and rnaapp.
If I choose Add (instead of Setup), it freezes right there. If I open the Dialup Networking icon in My Computer, it automatically launches a different "wizard", which freezes when I hit Next. If I get out of that and double-click Make New Connection, nothing happens. It just freezes with no display.
I thought it might be the modem or the joystick I recently installed. I removed the joystick but how do you test a modem? Anyway, I decided to suck it up and install one of these coasters, er, I mean AOL discs. AOL 8. It loaded so much crap and caused so many errors trying to install drivers and networks, who knows what happened.
On a lark, I grabbed an ancient AOL disc - version 3! It worked! I was able to connect without a problem. This is how I am here, now.
But there is an option in AOL 3 that allows you to connect via TCP/IP, so I thought I'd try that. It returned the error message:
(TCP/IP) Incorrect Windows Socket library (version 1.1 required) or network subsystem not ready (code: 10091)
Cross-referencing the code number with Microsoft's KB, I found a detailed method of uninstalling and re-installing DUN, including messing with the registry and renaming a bunch of files: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;181599
So I did everything it said on that page ... and everything still freezes when I try to make a connection, etc.
Am I screwed?
Something else: when I click on the Modem icon in Control Panel, it freezes. None of the other icons there do this.
