GIS Mapping?

can anyone please give me a brief explaination on what GIS mapping is? What language is this done in ?

I found a job opportunity involving training for GIS so I think it would help me if i knew what it was!!!!!

I have an html Jscript background.

a quick google search came up with a link to http://www.gis.com/whatisgis/index.html. the free software appears to be a GUI, probably done in C++

i thought it was a web development thing not geographic mapping software.
