when i got my computer(not new) after a week i had installed things from cds and about the next day the drive didn't work. my brother fixed it but now it doesn't like to install certain programs.
can someone please help me?
and i also have another question about my friends comp. every once in a while the screen will go blank and have a message that says now preparing your computer for stand-by but i checked and stand-by was disabled does it have to do with the moniter or somthing?

Sometimes you can get errors like those if you are having power supply problems (too many drives running, etc.). It gives strange errors, like can't find files or can't write to disk, etc. Do you have more than one media drive (CD or DVD), or multiple HDs? If not, it can often be as simple as running scandisk, since disks with quite a bit of bad data can do quite a bit of damage (though this is a longshot).

Was the box given to you as a clean-install of the OS, or did you reformat, or just install into what was already there?

no i don't have a DVD drive but i want one so i can right cds. i have a C: and D: drive and an E: drive (my cd drive ,to understand why this is, read first post in thread) i got the comp from my brothers girlfriend and she said it worked fine when she had it. i did try running scandisk and i defragged my comp but it still functionts the same.
