I believe that using a cursor that's not normal (ie: referencing it with a URL/I) is only supported in Internet Explorer ( )

But of course, the very same browser that allows you to change the scrollbar colors and userd to allow changing/removing of chrome...naturally it supports the changing of cursors to maximize your ability to make your pages a usability calamity for each and every IE user.

From a previous thread

It's a W3C defined standard supported by IE 6.0 and later which means that most people will now support it (I believe the current versions of Moz/Firebird support it, don't know about Safari or Opera).

Nevertheless, changing the user's cursor is not a good idea if you wish your site to have good usibility.

Here is a style that changes the cursor to any .ani or .cur file, I think it only works on Windows.

I would suggest using Cascade Style Sheets. An excellent example can be found on the following site: http://www.stewshack.com/css/mouse.asp

I'm sure these examples are all valid and good, but please take into account the fact that the user won't like their cursor changed a lot of the time, and it is bad for usability.

It is very annoying indeed having the cursor change once one enters a website, however changing the cursor to help style once a user goes over an acronym and then telling them what the acronym means is allright.

Yeah, but that doesn't involve a custom cursor, does it ;)

I use acronym, abbr { cursor: help } a lot myself.
