vBulletin 2.3 or 3.0 Gamma?

vBulletin is a forum standard used by many communities including CF. CF is running version 2.3 but the new 3.0 Gamma has been released recently even if not totally finished yet. I was wondering if people being part of communities running the 3.0 Gamma version did enjoy it better than the 2.3 or not.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find somebody who doesn't prefer the new vBulletin (3) over the current one (2.3). I would upgrade right now if it weren't for the potential hassle of having to do multiple updates along the way to official release. VB3 runs faster, has more features, and is more visually appealing IMO.

True. But I think that in terms of 'userfriendliness' (so to speak) the 2.3 was better. I've seen a lot of hacks requests to make parts of the 3.0 looks like the 2.3. It probably doesn't seem hard for people used to these boards like us to understand the functionning of the 3.0 but I'm sure that someone with no idea of how a vb board works will take more time to get used to it with 3.0 than 2.3 However such integrated features like the quickreply box are excellent. It was basically a hack released for version 2 by Chen (vbulletin.org owner) if I'm not mistaking. And tell me George, have you seen the adminCP of 3.0 Gamma? It's just amazing...

I think it's just a matter of getting used to the interface. VB3 is a lot more feature rich, so the interface obviously is more complex. But that's a necessary part of the equation. I haven't checked out the admin area of VB3, though definitely am looking forward to the new styles and ability to modify the look of individual categories easily.

I'm not sure when VB3 will be released, though I've heard Feburary.

style/template modifications opportunities are definitly incredible. I totally agree with what you said about getting used to it. Let's hope that users will not take too long for that ;)

If we're going to upgrade to vb3, how about using standard compliant code next time round, or can you not change that? For example, that menu ('Home | User Profile...') is coded with enough obselete tags as to make a grown man cry.

FUD against vB? I did not think about it but that would have made an interesting pol ... I am working on a vBulletin site right now. But I have another project where I'll use FUD so... I'm voting for both ;)

lol me too probably , VB is as polished as it currently gets for a commercial application , and FUD is missing a lot of that polish (and some features) .

... In saying that it is seriously good under the hood , I am porting all my stuff over to FUD and also using it as a back-end for a CMS.

Edit: The source code is appalling too.

vB3 will be XHTML compliant. Most of it is right now, as it's in it's RC1 stage. As for the Admin CP, WA, it's awesome. You should play around with it on a test section. The amount of options compared to vB2x is amazing. Conditions are great too.

the use of conditionals is awesome... amazing... you can tweak your vB without hacking PHP code and achieve almost anything you want. Now that the RC1 has been released vbulletin.org will start to release the hacks for what you can't do from the admin CP. Well to tell the truth I can't see an oponent to the vB RC1 right now.
