well i uploaded a template for my site www.stateofidleness.tk
still working on a layout for the blog portion of it... let me know what you think...

Why do people think that the smaller the font - the cooler the site looks :confused: :rolleyes:

I believe Vladdy's point is that you should use proportional font sizes such as % or em, so that people who find the text difficult to read can increase its size.

So for eg, get rid of this:

font-size: 10px;

and replace it with something like this:

font-size: 75%;

It will still be initially small, but now it's scaleable from the View > Text Size option in IE. You'll probably have to modify the way your column headers work, so that the design maintains its integrity with large text.


Looks good though - nice design :) Some kind of "lit-up" rollover effect on those buttons would be cool.

hey thanks brother... im concerned about something... if i do the text percentage thing, when they enlarge the text the table containing the graphics will be all messed up... any ideas/suggestions?

Be a bit more cunning - instead of slicing the graphic into three, slice it into nine, then place the corners as solid <img/> includes, but do the side and top strips in x or y repeatable backgrounds - that way, the table can expand in size while still maintaining a constant border.

Or something like that .. I'm typing off the top of my head you understand. My point is, if you approach it with flexibility in mind from the outset, you'll soon find it's not particularly difficult to acheive, just by using repeatable backgrounds in the areas which will expand.

im aware of the repeating backgrounds however the images used in the table cant be used like that... if they were stretched they would be distorted... ill see what i can come up with to try and make it tile... thx

Takes a bit long to load.

I personally don't mind smaller fonts.

Scaling fonts seems to be a bit creepy.

What you or I like or dislike is not the point, the point is that if you use an unscaleable font and along comes a visitor who simply cannot read it, and can't make it bigger, they'll just leave. There's nothing creepy about that - you'll feel differently when you're getting on and your eyesight starts to go :)

katalyst - you don't necessarily have to stretch the image. Your right panels have an obvious non-repeating pattern, but the top and bottom of those could be a thin, repeating strip of just dark color - effectively giving you expandable margins to the burst pattern in the middle.

While your making fonts scalable...
How about removing the text (linkNames) from the Flash file and positioning them using <div>s and scalable text?

I realise this is a Pain, but that's the first thing I look for.
P.S. Another check I do on my pages is commenting out the CSS import and seeing what my page will look like in a text based/old school browser.

It looks good but lose the IFRAME and make a table with the bottom image all the way on the bottom, 100%, and a side border around the content area.

My point is that I'm not one of those visitors. I don't mind 8-10px fonts, and I'll stay if a website exhibits them.

well... I just would like to point out that more and more people have flash disabled (asked liorean if I remember well). That's why I said that the very first version was my favorite one.
