View Full Version : Copying & pasting multiple layers?

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to transport multiple layers into another image (which also has layers)?

Eg. I've got a brochure that's A5 size, which I did in two separate files - front and back. I now want to have both sides printed on one side of an A4 document.

I've expanded the canvas on the front side from A5 to A4.

Now I need to transport the back side file to the expanded front side.

Is there any way I can do this to preserve the layers? That is, not just use the "copy merged" function and copy/paste the whole thing as one layer?

Thanks,

Meths

What program? Photoshop I assume, if so if you have both files open in Photoshop that you are copying the layer from and too, then focus on the file you are copying the layer from and drag the layer onto the other file (you will see the other files inside border go black) then drop it.

Think that is what you mean, hope it helped

Yep, photoshop 6.

That only transports one layer across at a time. I've got an image with about 50 layers that I want to preserve.

Any suggestions?

I think your gonna have to bite the bullet on this one...
How about linking and merging small sets of layers that don't overlap (not neccessary, but less time consuming) then adding registration marks (or even a vert. line will do) to create a common edge that all layers will share.
Use this 'common edge' to snap the layers into place in the A4 page. (Use a guide to lock them to the same place).
Then simply rub out the reg. line when your done

I wish there was another way, but in my 10 years of Photoshop use I'm yet to come across it.
Sorry;)

You could just do the following....I know I have a shorter method but it is not coming to me right now.......sorry!

1.Click on one of your layers in the one to be moved.

2.Link all the others to that layer.

3.Click the fly out menu in the layers pallette and choose "make new layer set from linked".

4.Drag that layer set to the destination file.

5.Click on the newly dragged "layer set" and from the flyout menu choose "delete layer set" and on the pop up that comes up choose "set only" that way it will leave you with your layers within your new image as needed.......

Hope this helps you out! I just did it to make sure it worked and it did so hopefully it will for you too........ I am in version 7.x but I am almost 100% certain it is identical in 6.....

-- Also, generally holding the shift key as you drag the layer, layer set or what-ever into the "new" file will preserve its X,Y coords...

Good Luck!

Also if you were to drag the layer or layer set directly from the lavers window and drop it on the new canvas it will maintain the X,Y coordinates.
