creating transparent gif

I have photoshop 7 and I am trying to create a transparent gif and its not coming out.

In file new, I selected the "transparent" radio button and then created an icon and then file > save for web as

My image is grey and it is sitting in an orange background. I can still see a white outline around the image. How can I create a clean transparent image?

What I usually do is open the image back up, use the magic wand tool, select the white with the magic wand set to a tolereance of 10 or so and NOT have the contiguous box checked. Once it is selected, hit delete and then deselct. The white should be gone. Save the image.

If you want, upload the image and I can do it. If my instructions aren't clear enough, ask some questions. :D

I tried the way you suggested but still I am getting white spots on the four corners of the image. The image is going to sit in different colored background (for example one page is mustard color, the other page is kind of blue and the rest are white color background pages). The only thing is the image is very small. I am attaching the image here and please let me know how this can be solved

Here's the simplest method.

Menu>help>export transparent image

and just follow the simple steps

Here you go. I did it the way I posted.

Open the image.
Chage mode to RGB.
Create New Layer and fill it black (forgot this step)
Double click on original layer so it gets renamed.
Move black layer "under" original layer
Select "white" corners with magic wand with anti ailiasing off tolerance of 1 and contiguous checked so it did not also select the question mark.
Hit delete and you should then see the black layer you created behind the corner. Repeat for each corner.
Save for web as transparent gif.

Took about 3 minutes to do......

ps. 2 of the corners "look" white, and 2 look light gray. That is the trasparency grid you see...

you know when ya just a save® for web??? isnt there just a dropdown® list where ya can select 'gif' n' thennn you get just a matte® to choose from???
