Hello All,

Okay heres was up.

Me and my bro are trying to connect our computers to play video games against eachother.

Anyways we both have nic cards and practicly the same computers.
We connected the computers directly with a LAN cord.(BELKIN)

We ran Windows "Home Network Connector" on both comps and they didn't connect. So we then tried a DIRECT CALBE connection and both computers said there was no other computer.

PLEASE PLEASE any help is must appreciated.

I NEED TO TEACH HIM A LESSON IN DUNE! hehehe

Thanks for any help you can provide.

If you're not using a switch/hub and just running a cable between each machine you need a cross over cable. Is that what your using?

A cross over cable simply reverses the transmit and recieve pins on one end so it will work. If you use a patch cable or straight through, it will not work.

If you have the proper tools, you can cut the connector off one end and convert a direct cable into a cross over, but it can be a real pain to get those connectors on at times, so just buy another cable and save the one ya got for a lan party. :)

We are goign from computer to computer and useing a Cat5e Patch Cable. We setup the two computers goign through the Add in the networks (Control Panel)

This is what we did and it still doesn't work.

Control Panel
Highlighted NIC Card.
Clicked " Add " button.
Added a Protocal
added "TCP->IP"
Gave my computer an IP address "10.1.1.2"
Gave my bros an IP address "10.1.1.1"
Gave both comps the submask "225.225.225.225"

Then windows ofcourse restarts BUT NOTHING HAPPENS!

when you then go to MS_DOS (prompt)

and type :

ping 10.1.1.1

UNABLE TO ACCESS HOST ect...

Over and over it says stuff like that. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Any ideas??????

Yeah, a patch cable won't work. they are design to go from the computer directly to a switch or to patch panel.

You need a cross over cable, that is where the problem lies.

I think you need to change your subnet mask too, you want 255.255.255.0 as well. 255.255.255.255 is not a valid subnet mask since it leaves no room for the subnet to exist.
