Is there any way to "flatten" a single layer so that the layer style blending options become an immutable part of the one layer?

You can svae it as a jpeg or gif or png and it will become "part" ot it permanently. Then reopen it and select it with the magic wand and drag it back to the original document and it should make a new layer out of it for you automatically. As long as it is a pasd file it will not be "part" of the layer and not editable until you save it as a different file type.
If you need step by step, let me knw and I will try to do that.
I am assuming you are speaking of Photoshop....

Yeah or you can simply rasterize that layer.
Select the layer then
Layer>Rasterize Layer
I'm recalling from memory but that should be right.
