Hi!
I need a favor: please take a second to view the main page of my website and tell me if you see anything?
Natalie Hijazi.com (http://www.nataliehijazi.com)
I don’t know if you’ll be able to see my main page or not, there is this problem for quite a while now that when I try to view my website by typing simply www.nataliehijazi.com, I get a black blank page, that page used to be the index saying ‘coming soon’, and has been deleted ages ago, but still pops up! I contacted the web host staff and they say they can see my page fine. Do YOU see it? I don’t!!!! (the only advice they had is delete my cache files and try again. sorry, that's NOT the problem when none of my friends can see it!!!)
However by adding index.html, u should be able to see it. This shouldn’t function this way! How is it that a webpage that doesn't even EXIST is still there replacing my main page? Any ideas or suggestions before I go back and blast the technical support?
By the way, if you’re curious to see my art, click here, it takes a bit of time to load, large graphics. (http://www.nataliehijazi.com/index.html)
Thanks!

Hmm, are you behind a proxy? You might want to look at your cache settings there.
Otherwise it loads fine for me.
It loads fine for me, as well ... nice artwork, btw.

Loaded for me.
No offense but I think you've nailed every bad idea one can do to a website.
List of bad ideas to do to a website:
- Best viewed in one browser at one resolution?
- Disabled right click/context menu
- Rely on popup windows and expect users to disable any anti-popup software they might have
- Open main page into fullscreen, resizing and moving the users browser window
- Removing all the users browser features
BTW DynamicDrive called, they want some of their scripts back. You cleaned them out. lol
Can't people with different resolutions just change their computer settings? Or not..., lol. I am using 1024x728, but changed to 800x600 for a few pages or so. I think the overall appearance looks nice:) Very nice artwork.

People should never have to change their resolution just to see some site.
And I do have to agree with Spookster.

Good news: everyone can see my site,
Bad news: my site sucks!
But I don’t mind ANY comments, good or bad, I need them. this is my 2nd try for a new site (1st site wasn’t anything, just pages with thumbnails), and have no common sense for this - or computers in general.
Its funny how i never saw how impractical the design is until pointed out to me… now that i think about it, it's a pain in the neck. too much attention on the look of the site rather than making it as ‘user friendly’ as possible.
Point out anything else that is considered a ‘no-no’ in web building. I want to get a general idea of what makes a good website. As for now this ill-design will stay until i get back- I’ll be going back to study in Florence and I don’t have a computer there. So i get to play around with web building only a few times a year.

HA!!! :D
thanks, people!
Ciao.
I guess not... It is a tad annoying though. Especially to beginners like me... On the subject of resolutions, what is the most common viewed resolution.... 800x600, or 1024x768?? Most people tell me that 1024x728 is slowly taking over 800x600. Is that true? Most of the sites I have browsed have been a mixture of both, so it is hard to say.

800x600 is the resolution that is most common and the resolution to design for, however you should make you design fluid in higher resolutions where possible. Followed by 1024.
However you don't necessarily need to design for 800x600 depending on your audience, for example if you run a site that talks about something like say plug-ins for apache, most of the people visitng your site will be server administrators, and most people like that are going to be running at least 1024.

Did you notice that when you click your 2nd link that it has a comma after the .com (i.e.: www.natiliehijazi.com, )
I am unclear whether or not you fixed your prob with the index but one solution would be to try and rename Index.html to be Default.html. I realise that index.html is the start starting point but some host just haven't caught on. So make sure thats what they have set.

Since you asked:
-First no no you used FrontPage to design your site. LoL:D
-You should use relative paths in for your site. Major maitenance nightmare if you decide to restructure your site using absolute paths. I normally create a folder aptly named 'images' in the root directory, I place all of graphics inside. Then I just use-- img src="images/picturename.jpg or whatver extension. To display my image.
-Give elements meaningful names and do not use Frontpage defaults (i.e. AutoNumber 1, ...2, ...3)
-Since you go back and forth with formatting text look at using CSS instead of HTML it will save you some time.
-I usually don't hardcode every table width and height. I only explicitly set the ones I need to be a specific size. But that is just a personal thing but I think most designers agree with me.
