Hi, I have created my portfolio web site and want to host it. Are there any free web hosting sites.

Or Is there a way I can host web site using my own personal PC? I am currently running WinXP Pro and have IIS installed on my system.

I can recommend www.ithium.net, they have great rates. Krycek (a member here) runs/owns it. Brinkster is free but they do cap your transfer per month pretty low unless you pay, but there are no ads.

The best place to look for information on hosting would be at www.webhostingtalk.com

You can try http://www.f2o.org Go to the sign-up page and use the contact form to ask for a free account. It is a community for web developers and designers that offers free hosting. Free php, ASP, ColdFusion, MySql, cgi, etc...

75MB of space and 3GB of transfer per month free... no ads

Thanks a lot for the replay.

I also want to explore the way of hosting it on my own system. As I have never done it before, I want to learn to do it myself. I can run IIS. Is it easy to manage as far as security is concerned.

Will appreciate any advice.

With Windows XP Professional it isn't practical to host your own website because M$ has built in limitations on the version of IIS that it uses. You can only have 10 connections at once (or is it 5?) and that doesn't work out too well. Plus you can only have one website on the machine too. So when people view your site they are going to probably see lots of connection refused errors. And the connections at once means the number of sessions not files being x-fer'd at that moment.

If you are really serious about hosting it yourself, you'll need to get a copy of Windows 2003 Server.

Or get a LAMP (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP) system instead. It's a bit more job getting started, but a lot less money.

Quite true.

I found www.freewebs.com is decent. It has no ads what so ever. The only down side is that it has no FTP access and that you can only upload one file at a time. Its not the greatest but it is pretty nice for a free site.
