ionsurge 09-18-2003, 05:19 PM I felt that the old stock photo thread needed a little tidying up, so here are a list of the popular stock photo collections that are used by many web developers.
For those of you who do not know what a stock photo is, it is basically pictures of people, places, or objects. Clicking on one of the links will give you a better idea of what they are.

Dr.Lee 01-16-2009, 09:02 PM Hi all,
to answer niko's question... in most cases you cannot use Flickr's picture on your website without linking back. Almost all the pictures there are copyrighted. However, the people who post their pictures can decide to put it under a certain copyright that allows you to use their pics. You still have to acknowledge it's theirs though. I hope that helped!
wedding-shop 12-30-2009, 11:33 PM http://www.morguefile.com/ is a great one too, it has fee stock images not all are great but most are useful.
chefs 01-08-2010, 03:48 PM Cool. I was actually looking for stock photos.. I had a hard time looking for few over the net.. Hope I can find a photo not smaller than 900px.. Are we sure that those images are free? :)

Daniella 02-25-2010, 12:24 AM I like morguefile too, but use istock photo a lot :) - I want to know why getty charges so darn much for their images? I can see a lot for images of movie stars, but not regular images...just confuses me.

sarenarichard 01-04-2011, 01:00 PM Flickr has copyright matters so you should ask them before copying.
jack123 03-13-2011, 01:21 AM YES. Even if a photographer doesn't have a "package" that you want, most of them will work with you and cater a special package to your needs. Remember YOU are hiring THEM, YOU tell THEM what you want!! Some photographers are sticklers about their prices, but keep shopping around!

I was just thinking that when I saw it in the list, do you have to ask flickr or the user that upoaded the image?
Major Payne 03-14-2011, 10:20 PM States:
Do link back to Flickr when you post your Flickr content elsewhere.
Flickr makes it possible to post content hosted on Flickr to other web sites. However, pages on other web sites that display content hosted on flickr.com must provide a link from each photo or video back to its page on Flickr. This provides a way to get more information about the content and the photographer.

logoonlinepros 09-08-2011, 09:09 AM Deviantart and flicker is best one choice where we can find all best and awesome photography stocks.
www.fotolia.com is missing.
Starting from 2$ per picture but still some quality images like istockphoto..
timmymagic 12-06-2011, 11:46 PM flickr is great, but i always check with the person first before using any image, even if its being edited.. best to be safe, and always good practice :)
jellygraphics 12-10-2011, 09:53 PM I like morguefile too, but use istock photo a lot :) - I want to know why getty charges so darn much for their images? I can see a lot for images of movie stars, but not regular images...just confuses me.
The reason for this is a photographer that's shooting for Getty etc will be trying to recoup the costs of model hire, location, lighting, probably some support staff, and all those hidden costs that are associated with photography. If you hire a photographer and model and go to the trouble of finding a location, getting permission to shoot there if required, hiring some extra equipment (maybe a power generator for example) you'd quickly spend thousands getting one or two shots...so the cost of using a stock image - even if it's £600-700 for many corporate budgets is simply a no-brainer.
Getty shots do tend to be of a certain calibre that the microstock sites simply struggle to match, that said there are some really good images on the likes of iStock etc etc, but the chances are if they're good, they've been used several times before by competitors...
Getty is good as well at niche images - things that are a little different and against the usual run-of-the-mill...like everything "you get what you pay for"
dougcollins02 01-12-2012, 08:33 PM A great resource if you're looking for stock texture photography is http://wojtar-stock.deviantart.com. I use his textures in most things I do.
