Shadow Problems

After looking through the forum, I don't think i've found a problem similar mine.
What i'm trying to do is add a shadow to either side of an image, here's a site that illustrates what i'm trying to do: http://shop.ugmonk.com/
Everytime I attempt to add a shadow to either side (not top or bottom) the effects offset each other, resulting in no shadow at all.
Now i'm not sure if they use shadows there, but it has a shadow-like effect on a perfect line, going vertically down the entire page from header to footer.
Any suggestions?

As the CSS3 shadow property is not supported by IE 8 and below I would not recommend using it because more than 10% of the internet users are using versions of IE that doesn't support CSS3 shadows.

The website you have referred to has used this image (but of course it's getting repeated to cover the whole height of the page) for generating the shadows, and I would recommend you to use a similiar solution: http://www.ugmonk.com/wp-content/themes/ugmonk/images/shadow.png
