I am trying to go from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7.

The 32 bit Vista was installed by mistake. My system can handle a 64 bit OS. Now I have finally found the time to upgrade. But the 64 bit intallation DVD can't be read from my OS. Any Advice?

Do I need to boot from that DVD drive? Will that work?

yes you can boot from the DVD but you can't do an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit you will have to do a fresh install.

if you boot from the DVD it will install windows on your existing partition and leave your old Users/Program Files/Program Data and Windows folders in a folder called c:\windows.old , any other folders in C: are left untouched.

you would then end up with a vanilla install & would need to do drivers etc, then copy your data back from the windows.old directory , all this assumes you dont format the drives during the install process (which is NOT the default option)
