View Full Version : Debian / Subnet

I'm learning all about subnetting.

I've all ready learned about octets, and all the math that goes with it. I am now trying to learn about physically / literally applying the subnet info.

I am using the Debian OS on my server. I know i need to alter the interfaces file.

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
#allow-hotplug eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address xxx.xxx.x.xxx
netmask xxx.xxx.x.xxx
network xxx.xxx.x.xxx
broadcast xxx.xxx.x.xxx
gateway xxx.xxx.x.xxx
Here is my question.
once I enter all of the information in my interfaces file does that enable the range of IP addresses associated with my broadcast IP.

Basically... After I edit and save my interface file can I then start assigning IP addresses in the range to clients? Or is there another step I have to do after editing and saving the interfaces file?

Hi , the interfaces file is for admin of the local interfaces it does not contol ip's given out to clients e.g. it is not part of a DHCP server if thats what you are wanting to do, for that you need to install dhcp3-server

see http://www.howtoforge.com/dhcp_server_linux_debian_sarge for a decent how-to

Firepages, thanks. I realized this earlier tonight. But why does the interfaces file have a broadcast IP in it? What does it need that for?

me not a network guru but simply put it tells the machine what range to broadcast (services) on, e,g, which part of the subnet it can send information to

you don't actually need to add the broadcast address line in your interfaces file nor the network one since these are automatically worked out for you (ifcalc).

not saying that it would hurt to know exatly what they do but they are not actually required in the interfaces file any more
