A teacher at my school needs some help..
Here is what happened...
- Downloaded Adobe Photoshop
- Every image started opening up in it
- It took to long to open, so she uninstalled it
Now, all the image (.jpg, .gif) files show up with the "Uknown File" icon.
You cannot open them, not even the "Unknown File, select program to open with" does not come up either. You can open it up by going to an image program (Paint, etc.) and going File >> Open, but you cannot open them by just clicking them.
How do I fix this?
BTW, this is Windows 98

Open up explorer...
Tools --> Folder Options --> File Types
Locate the association(s) that you want to change and select 'Edit'
Put in the program you want to open them (include the full path, if the path is broken with spaces place the path between quotes, i.e. - "C:\Program Files\...\...\mplayer.exe")

As long as they have IE5 or higher those instructions should be spot on....

That didn't do the trick :(
The .gif and .jpg were set to open in the default picture viewer, so i reapplied it, but it still will not open and has the "Unkown File" Icon...

not sure that the version of IE would matter, and by what sage is talking about when he says Explorer is not internet explorer, its basically an explore on the file system. So any folder to find the selected extensions should do the trick. Having the files getting associated with IE would work or you could even d/l quicktimes picture viewer and have it reassoiciate all the files for you.

I believe it is IE6, but I know it is more than IE5.
I done this in Windows Explorer, was I supposed to do it in IE??

no, thats right....windows explorer...technically any folder would work....just make sure that when you are going through and doing the association you do them all, don't do a .JPG and not a .JPEG file.....

Well actually Jason, the version of IE has a lot to do with it... Out of the box, Win98 comes with IE3... When you upgrade your IE to 5 or 6, it includes snap-ins that change the Windows Explorer (and the menu structure therein)... This allows for you to seamlessly move between them both and a couple of other things also ;) ... I was wanting to know which version so that he could reinstall it... The reinstall would reassociate the files in question...
To reinstall:
Goto 'Start' --> 'Run' --> 'Regedit'
Inside the Registry Editor goto -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Double-click the 'IsInstalled' key and change the value from '1' to '0'
Close the Registry Editor
Open IE and goto:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/ie6sp1/finrel/6_sp1/W98NT42KMeXP/EN-US/ie6setup.exe
Choose 'Open' and install as you would normally...

Using the method through Windows Explorer does't work :(
Any alternative methods??

So you reinstalled IE and it didn't reassociate the files?
Hmmm...

I would try reinstalling IE then with the instructions specified above... This should reassociate the image files with IE...

If a file has no association you should just be able to double-click it, and then you'll get the "windows doesn't know what to use" dialogue, which gives you a choice of applications. Choose the application, and check "always use this application to open these files", and it should be okay after that?

Yeah, thats what I thought, too. But that dialog box didn't come up
