I am building a personal graphic design portfolio website to introduce myself and showcase my graphic design pieces to prospective employers or clients. On the front page I would like to have a slideshow with a few examples of my work, using the Ken Burns Effect (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqnJMYeZF0w&feature=related) to make for a more visually appealing presentation.

I am not a web developer by any means, but I have basic HTML and Flash knowledge. Initially my idea was to create a a small Flash "window" I would insert into my page--which I could do with my current skills--and create the rest of the page in HTML, but I want to make the page auto-detect user resolution and wasn't sure if that was possible/reasonable in Flash. I did some research and I discovered you can achieve the same result with javascipt, using jQuery and an associated plugin called CrossSlide (http://tobia.github.com/CrossSlide/) (one solution anyways). I have absolutely no experience with javascript and in trying to steamroll self-teach my way into success, I found it was way beyond my current understanding.

I thought I would come here for advice. What is the most practical way to have a small slideshow with the Ken Burns Effect showcasing some static images of my work on a website that auto-detects user resolution? I'm ok with learning Javascript from the ground up, if that's the best solution, at least to the point of achieving my current goal. I don't know what possible/reasonable alternatives there are, though.

I would say JQuery is your best shot ... most browser compatible.
You found CrossSlide, but did you also view demos from some other sites?

Determining screen size is a problem. Methods for that aren't so reliable.

I'm not sure if Apple will utilize Flash in the new iPad or not.
Flash is probably not the most compatible.
