View Full Version : E-commerce and forum combo?

Firstly, are there any decent (free - moderately priced) e-commerce/forum combos out there?
Things to consider are security, features, ease of use and price.
I've experimented with free e-commerce packages in the past and wasn't too impressed with what was on offer.
This time I want some first hand reviews before I start downloading and trying endless packages.
If not a combo, what packages do you think would intergrate well together?
eg: Prestashop and vBulletin.
Thanks in advance :)

I don’t think that there are any decent software out there that do both, e-commerce and forum, equally well. The best would be to install two separate systems that are specialized on their functionality. And they integrate just as well as you make them. You can apply themes/styles and URL rewriting so that you wouldn’t notice any difference between the systems.
PrestaShop is pretty good although it’s kind of a pain in the butt to upgrade, especially if you’ve done some modifications to the functionality since you need to mess with the modules themselves sometimes as only modifying the theme doesn’t suffice. But from what I’ve experienced it was the best you could get for free. For forum software I guess phpBB is the most popular free one out there but I’ve read and heard good things about Vanilla (http://vanillaforums.org/), too.
You can read reviews and try different systems without installing them yourself on http://www.opensourcecms.com/ (side navigation on the left).
I've found openCart to be pretty good for e-Commerce, but had exactly the same issue as VIPStephan describes with Prestashop in that I needed to amend the core code to make it do what I wanted.

Thanks for the responses.
I know I'm able to try out demos of all these software packages online, though I've found in the past that after downloading what appears to look and feel great, may not actually be so great after all.
I was just after some personal experiences with decent packages.
I've used phpBB a couple of years ago, and although I liked the usability of it, I kept on be warned that it lacked in security.
Maybe I'll give it another try...
I've used PrestaShop in the past too, and from what I remember it was the best one from quite a few free ones I'd tried.
Can't remember if I used OpenCart, so I might have a look into that :)
Any other suggestions are more than welcome, thank you.

I've used IPB (Invision) since March 2004 for my forums, and I've used Zen-Cart for awhile,, its kinda cool with what they did for their re-write rules,, you can make allot of mods and you dont have to deal with your core files, makes upgrades easy too. Currently I've used Cube Cart for the last few years, but its just about like all the storefronts out there,, none of them work the way you'll want one to and they always seem to be yet another upgrade.. I'm sick of Cube Cart and have been looking Product Cart.
